In 2012 Scout Gang Show Cub Scouts from Pack 3 Derby performed “It’s a Small World” with Troop 3 Scout Joe Szewczyk
Derby - The more than 100 members of Housatonic Council Cub Scout Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 33 will present their 89th Annual Scout Gang Show on May 10 & 11, 7:30PM at the Derby United Methodist Church, located near the Derby Green at the corner of 5th & Elizabeth Streets. Part old time minstrel, vaudeville, and variety show, the longest running show of its kind has been performed by the Derby scouts annually since 1922 (shows weren’t performed for 2 years during World War II). Although the Derby show is the only one performed in the United States, Scout Gang Shows are performed by Scout groups throughout the United Kingdom and former British colonies.
Award winning stage and screen performer Brian Dennehy and local Center Stage director Gary Scarpa are among the scouting alumni who performed in the show as youths under the direction of the late Scouting pioneer Edmund D. Strang. http://www.electronicvalley.org/derby/quiz/Pages/straanged.htm
Highlights of this year’s “That’s Entertainment” themed show include “Willkommen” by Troop 3 Senior Patrol Leader and chorus director Matthew Moran, “Make Em Laugh” by Cub Jackson Kellogg and “Born to Be Wild” by Scout James Chopak. The director and interlocutor for the show is Troop 3 Scoutmaster Randy Ritter and piano accompaniment is provided by Jeremey Lombard. Lighting and sound is under the direction of Assistant Scoutmaster John Spinetti.
The “Endmen” or joke tellers for the show include Troop 3 and Crew 33 members Neeraj Madivala, Steven Tracz, Andrew Devine, Billy Kowarik, Michael McMahon, Dominic Livoti, Aron Zamfino and Colby McLiverty. “Stooges” performing run on skits for the show are David Ahearn, Mike Neuendorf, John Murray, Matt Edwards and Justin Patton. The Stooges are under the direction of Mr. Rodman Kneen, Sr. who has been involved with the show for 81 years, having first performed as a Cub in the 1932 show.
Special guests include Sarah Widomski, Sara Poppa, and Troop 3 Committeeman and former Mayor of Derby, Marc Garofalo. Tickets are available for $7 from Pack 3, Troop 3 and Crew 33 scouts, or by calling 732-0343. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds from the show assist scouts in attending Housatonic Cub Scout Day Camp, Boy Scout Summer Camp at the Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation in Goshen and Housatonic Council Scouts attending the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.

A Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby Court of Honor was held recently at the troop’s sponsoring organization, Derby 2nd Congregational Church.
Slide presentations were made by the scouts on their travels as representatives of Troop 3. Eagle Scout Neeraj Madivala and Life Scout Michael Neuendorf spoke on their month-long adventure as exchange scouts to Peterborough, England. A similar presentation was made showing the activities enjoyed by Life Scouts Steven Tracz, John Murray and Brian Welch, who were exchange scouts to Limerick, Ireland.
Crew leaders Michael Tracz, Colby McLiverty and Micheal Shea then presented photos of Troop 3’s recent week-long sailing adventure in the Florida Keys as part of the BSA Florida Sea Base high adventure program. Twenty two scouts and leaders, including Limerick, Ireland exchange scouts James Glasson and Cian Neilan, served as the crew and enjoyed fishing, snorkeling and lobstering aboard 50 foot sail boats. Fifteen scouts from the troop along with Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Butler and Crew Advisor Tom Murray will participate as members of Housatonic Council BSA’s contingent attending the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virgnia. Scoutmaster Randy Ritter announced plans for Troop 3’s 2014 super trip, a 3-week cross country camping adventure, as part of troop’s 100th anniversary celebration activities.
Senior Patrol Leader Matthew Moran directed the opening of the Court of Honor program. Stuart Oja and Zachary Thomas were welcomed as Troop 3’s newest members. Joe Szewczyk and Aron Zamfino were honored for achieving Star Rank. It was also announced that Evan Altamirano has become Troop 3’s 282nd scout to achieve Eagle Scout Rank since the troop was founded in 1914.

DERBY – Made up of young men ages 11 to 17, from throughout the Valley, Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby will begin its 99th year of Scouting on Sept. 5, 7PM at the Derby Second Congregational Church on Elizabeth Street, across from the Derby Green. Meetings are held at the church each Wednesday through June and all interested boys may visit with a parent or guardian.
The Junior Leaders who run the weekly troop meetings and monthly campouts as members of the Patrol Leaders Council include Senior Patrol Leader Matthew Moran, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders Ryan Cafaro, Colby McLiverty and Brian Welch, Patrol Leaders Anthony Bartholomew, Joe Szewczyk, Marcel Aguirre, James Butler and Matthew Edwards, Scribe Aron Zamfino, Chaplain Aide James Cobaugh, OA Representative Mike Flora, Webmaster Jason Edwards, Quartermaster Dominic Livoti, Historian Alex Main, Patrol Guide Steve Tracz, Instructors Billy Kowarik, John Murray, Michael Neuendorf and Junior Assistant Scoutmasters Neeraj Madivala, Mike Tracz and Andrew Devine.
Monthly meeting themes include: salesmanship, international, paranormal, history, military/ aviation, technology, astronomy, music, creativity, sports, and shooting sports. Highlighting the year will be attending Strang Scout Reservation summer camp, 2013 National Scout Jamboree and hosting exchange scouts from Derby, England.
The scouts will be offering a free hands-on “Panorama of Scouting” event to introduce the program to all children. The annual event, called Ed Strang Day on the Derby Green in honor of the late Scouting pioneer, will be held at the Derby Green on September 29. For more information call 203 732 0343.

The Whirling Dervishes Patrol was recognized as the top patrol of the year and the Top 10 scouts earning the most points for the Scout year were: 1st Jimmy Butler, 2nd Ryan Cafaro, 3rd Colby McLiverty, 4th Josh Moscato, 5th Dominic Livoti, 6th Steven Tracz, 7th James Chopak, 8th Alex Main, 9th Matt Edwards and 10th Matt Moran. The top patrol and top 10 scouts were awarded for their efforts with a trip to 6 Flags New England Amusement Park.
Mrs. Katherine Hemstreet received the James E. West Endowment Award from her husband Charles Hemstreet Sr. on behalf of the National Boy Scouts of America for her longtime support of Scouting.
Troop 3 Scouts will be attending two weeks of summer camp at Housatonic Council’s Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation, located in Goshen. They will also be hosting English exchange scouts James Blount and Jack Tibbett from Peterborough and Irish exchange scouts James Daly and Aiden Long, from Limerick. The exchange scouts will also be joining thirty Troop 3 scouts and leaders on a two-week camping trip in August to the national parks of the Pacific Northwest.
