Troop 3 Scouts recognized at June Court of Honor

DERBY – Scouts from Derby 2^nd Congregational Church sponsored Troop 3 were recently recognized for earning merit badges and rank advancement.

 Earning the following merit badges were: American Heritage: James Butler, Ryan Cafaro, Andrew Devine, Jason Edwards, Dylan Krystopowicz, Dominic Livoti, and Joseph Szewczyk,  Citizenship in the Community: Bryson Cafaro, Matthew Edwards, Steven Tracz, and Larry Cafaro,  Citizenship in the Nation: Matthew Edwards, Anthony Bartholomew and Ryan Kish, Citizenship in the World: Matthew Edwards, Anthony Bartholomew and James Bulter,  Carpentry: Steven Tracz, and Engineering: David Ahearn.

Also, Family Life: Anthony Bartholomew, First Aid: Anthony Bartholomew. Eagle – Patrick Matuska, Eagle Bronze Palm – Neeraj Madivala and Alex Oppel, Eagle Silver Palm – Tyler Stankye.

The Whirling Dervishes Patrol was recognized as the top patrol of the year and the Top 10 scouts earning the most points for the Scout year were: 1^st Jimmy Butler, 2^nd Ryan Cafaro, 3^rd Colby McLiverty, 4^th Josh Moscato, 5^th Dominic Livoti, 6^th Steven Tracz, 7^th James Chopak, 8^th Alex Main, 9^th  Matt Edwards and 10^th Matt Moran. The top patrol and top 10 scouts were awarded for their efforts with a trip to 6 Flags New England Amusement Park.

Mrs. Katherine Hemstreet received the James E. West Endowment Award from her husband Charles Hemstreet Sr. on behalf of the National Boy Scouts of America for her longtime support of Scouting.

Troop 3 Scouts will be attending two weeks of summer camp at Housatonic Council’s Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation, located in Goshen. They will also be hosting English exchange scouts James Blount and Jack Tibbett from Peterborough and Irish exchange scouts James Daly and Aiden Long, from Limerick. The exchange scouts will also be joining thirty Troop 3 scouts and leaders on a two-week camping trip in August to the national parks of the Pacific Northwest.

I know exactly what you mean about the sctous. My son joined cub sctous after no less than a billion hours of soul-searching on my part. I like the fact that it teaches them so many good things - basic skills, citizenship, discipline, etc. But I HATE the anti-gay thing (and feel a little uncomfortable - even as a not-so-great christian - with the God stuff). It took the prompting of a lesbian scout leader that I met online to finally go for it. But several years later, I still have problems with the same things. And being the type to speak my mind, there has been no shortage of "friendly" arguments between the scout leader and me over the gay issue. I am just hoping that I am raising him right and he comes away with the good things from sctous and still learns the values I want him to.
