DERBY – Sixteen rank advancements and more than 160 merit badges earned by Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby scouts were presented recently during a Court of Honor held at the Derby Second Congregational Church, sponsoring organization of the troop since 1914.
New scouts Anthony Bartholomew, Scott Lee, Bill Smith, Mike Getlein and Aron Zamfino were welcomed into Troop 3 by Scoutmaster Randy Ritter. The new scouts joined since September during the Ed Strang Day on the Derby Green. Their membership registration and uniforms were provided through a grant from the Valley Community Foundation.
Under the direction of Troop 3 Advancement Chairman Rich Mezzapelle, the following rank advancements were presented by members of the Troop 3 Committee: Scout Rank: Anthony Bartholomew, Scott Lee and Aron Zamfino. Tenderfoot Rank: James Chopak, James Cobaugh, Jason Edwards and Benjamin Grasso. Second Class Rank: Marcel Aguirre and James Cobaugh. First Class Rank: Marcel Aguirre and Joseph Szewczyk. Star Rank: Matthew Edwards and Life Rank: Justin Patten. Eagle Scout Bronze Palm: Tyler Stankye, Eagle Scout Gold Palm: Chuck Stankye and Eagle Scout Silver Palm: Mac Thompson.

The Whirling Dervishes, Pink UPMA, Ghost Riders and Bananas in Pajamas Patrols were recognized for placing 2nd, 4th, 5th and 9th out of 32 patrols at the recent Housatonic Council Fall Camporee at Ed Strang Scout Reservation in Goshen.
In addition, slide presentations were made by Alex Oppel and Michael Tracz, who were exchange scouts to Limerick, Ireland, Mac Thompson and Tyler Stankye, who were exchange scouts to Peterborough England, and Neeraj Madivala and John Murray, who attended the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience at Philmont Training Center in Cimmaron, New Mexico.
The troop is currently selling ready to bake holiday pies to raise funds for summer camp and for a two-week camping trip to the national parks along the Pacific Coast.
Upcoming events for Troop 3 include participation in Housatonic Council’s annual Scouting For Food Drive, a November camping weekend at the Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation Tierney Leantos and a December cabin camping weekend at the Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation Bassett Building.
