Troop 3 kick off 97th year of Scouting
DERBY – Founded in 1914 and still sponsored by the Derby 2nd Congregational Church, Housatonic Council Boy Scout Troop 3 resumes weekly meetings on Wednesdays, 7PM beginning September 8. The troop's missioned is alligned with the National Boy Scouts of America: to build character, foster citizenship and develop physical fitness through hands on activities and camping weekends.
The Derby based troop has received the Silver Medal by the Valley Chamber of Commerce and was recognized in 2007 as Valley United Way Youth Group of the Year.
The troop is composed of more than fifty young men who are between the ages of 11 and 17 and live in Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Woodbridge and Beacon Falls. There are several openings in the troop’s membership and all boys are encouraged to attend a troop meeting at the Derby 2nd Congregational Church on Elizabeth Street to see the Scouts in action. Uniforming and new membership registration during September and October is being funded from a grant by the Valley Community Foundation.
Led by Senior Patrol Leader Neeraj Madivala and the Patrol Leader’s Council, the troop has selected the following monthly themes for troop meetings and camping trips: Environmental, Fall Camporee Preparation, Iron Chef, Knots & Survival, Imagination, Klondike Derby Preparation, Merit Badge College, International Sports, Biking & Hiking, Military and Summer Camp Preparation.
Assisting Madivala as members of the Patrol Leader’s Council include: John Murray, Andrew Devine, Alex Oppel, Michael Neuendorf, Michael Tracz, Mac Thompson, Nick Laskos, David Ahearn, Alex Main, Dominic Livoti, Joe Borelli, Steve Tracz, Tyler Stankye and Colby McLiverty. Scoutmaster Randy Ritter leads the adults along with a large number of assistant scoutmasters and committee members.
The scouts have had a very active summer. In addition to two weeks of summer camp at Housatonic Council's Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation thirty of the scouts and leaders attended the 100th anniversary BSA National Jamboree in Virgina, two scouts took part in the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience in New Mexico and five scouts enjoyed three weeks as exchange scouts to England and Ireland.
Next summer Troop 3 will host exchange scouts from Ireland and England and they will journey with the troop on a two-week camping trip to the national parks of the Pacific Coast, from Los Angeles to Seattle. Complete draft calendar of events can be found here: Download Trp 3 2010 11
