Top 10 scouts/ top patrol to go on Cape Cod trip beginning on the evening of June 25 and ending on the afternoon of June 28 (drivers needed). Some patrols did not include camporee attenance for individual points. Be sure to include all attendance at the recent Memorial Service & Parade events (worth 100 points each).

Troop Court of Honor/Picnic will be on Wed night June 10 instead of June 13. All advancement and completed merit badge cards must be handed in to Advancement Chair Mike Breault by May 27.  Families are asked to bring a salad or dessert to the picnic.

Summer Camp Medical forms: Mrs Edwards (our camp nurse) will be taking all updated medical forms required for summer camp. All updated forms must be handed in by June 3^rd. All medication containers for camp should have the scout's photo attached to it.

Canyon Adventure Mandatory Hike: Our Canyon Adventure Crew will take a day hike at Bear Mountain in Salisbury on July 11^th following the Summer Camp Court of Honor. Exchange Scout Host Families: We are taking signups for families interested in hosting our exchange scouts this summer. 3 Irish and 2 English scouts for the following dates July 8-11, July 18-30, Aug 10-12. Let Randy know if your family is interested in hosting 2 or 3 scouts for a few days. Mrs. Rhonda Thompson will serve as the Exchange Scout Host coordinator.

Derby Summer Concert Concession sales: Parents of 2010 Jamboree scouts are being given the first opportunity to sign up for helping at the summer concerts. Summer camp merit badge & tent mates signup. Know which week or weeks you are attending camp. Print out, review available meritbadges by time and fill out the form, one form for each week you are attending camp. 1st year scouts will participate in the 1st year program the 1st week they attend camp and then select merit badges for the 2nd week. Merit badges are only offered at specific times and you can only register for one merit badge per time slot. Help us by completing all forms accurately. Regarding tentmates, we have 3 Irish and 2 English scouts and each needs a tent mate during Week 2. Let Randy know if you are interested. Summer camp Senior Patrol Leaders will also be elected and then they will appoint summer camp patrol leaders, giving current Patrol Leaders top priority.

May 30 - Troop 3 Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Mike Herde 4PM  in Oxford. All are invited. Picnic to follow.

June 5-6 Order of the Arrow Ordeal Weekend and Beaver Day at Strang Scout Reservation. Come and help prepare YOUR camp for the summer. All Ordeal candidates must attend to be elected into the OA. Current Ordeal members have the opportunity to advance to Brotherhood. All scouts & families are invited to help.

June 7 - Troop 3's 95th Anniversary Celebration, 12PM @ Villa Bianca, Seymour. All Troop 3 Scouts in Class A uniforms will be admitted free of charge to the celebration provided they attend with a parent and register in advance. Every Troop 3 Scout who attends will receive a free 95th Anniversary neckerchief.. Adult tickets are $25 and children $15. 95th anniversary tshirts, hats and neckerchiefs will be available at the event.. Troop 3’s Oldest Living Eagle Scout, Grandson of Derby’s first Mayor, to attend 95th Celebration

DERBY - At age 92, Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby’s oldest living Eagle Scout James O’Sullivan, of Stratford, will lead all Eagle Scouts present in reciting the Eagle Scout Oath at Troop 3’s 95^th anniversary celebration on June 7 at the Inn at Villa Bianca in Seymour.

O’Sullivan was presented with Eagle Scout Rank on Oct 6, 1933 and was the 7^th Troop 3 Derby Scout to attain that honor. Troop 3 was founded at the Derby 2^nd Congregational Chuch in 1914 and it was not until 1928 that Manual Pearson became the troop’s first Eagle Scout. Alexander Neundorf recently became Troop 3’s 265^th Eagle Scout Scout.

James O’Sullivan spent 30 years in the Foreign Service and then 15 years at the University of Louisville, where he chaired the Political Science Department. He is the son of the late Connecticut Chief Justice Patrick B. O’Sullivan and he is the grandson of the late Dr. Thomas Jefferson O’Sullivan, the first Mayor of Derby.

O’Sullivan fondly remembers growing up in Derby, being a member of Boy Scout Troop 3 with Ed Strang, and attending Housatonic Council’s Camp Irving, which was located on the Housatonic River near Indian Well State Park.  "Our current scouts will be fortunate to have the opportunity to meet such a distinguished Troop 3 alumnus as Mr. O'Sullivan" stated John Anglace, chairman of the 95th anniversary celebration.

85th Annual Scout Gang Show in Derby

DERBY -  Derby United Methodist Church, at the corner of 5th and Elizabeth Street, the home of Pack 3, the oldest Cub Scout Pack in the United States, is also home to the world's longest running Scout Gang Show . Originally known as a Minstrel Show, when the annual performance began in 1922, the Housatonic Council Cub Scout Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 33 Annual Scout Gang Show has been performed annually, except for two years during World War II. The show follows in the tradition of British Scout Gang Shows, with songs, skits and jokes performed by the members of the three scout groups. The local show is the only known show of its kind performed in the United States, however Gang Shows are performed throughout the United Kingdom, Australia and beyond. It is said that not a day goes by that a Scout Gang Show isn't performed somewhere in the world. In fact,  Scout Gang Show will take place in Newport and North Hampton, England on the same weekend as Derby's Scout Gang Show. Some of the many thousands of scouts who have performed locally over the 85 years include movie and theater actor Brian Dennehy, Center Stage Director Gary Scarpa, Shelton Aldermanic President John Anglace, Bill Menna, the former Mayor of Ansonia, and Marc Garofalo, former Mayor of Derby, who will be making a special guest performance again this year as he has done for more than 30 years. Troop 3 alumnus Jeffrey Johns, who performed in the show in the 1990s, has worked as the character Peter Pan at Disneyland and he will appear in TV show, America's Got Talent this summer.

 

For most of it's history, the show was under the direction of the late Scouting pioneer and charter Derby Hall of Fame member Edmund D. Strang. Troop 3 Scoutmaster Randy Ritter is in his 15th year serving as interlocutor and director for the show and pianist Marc Weissman is pianist for his 4th year. Fun men, or joke tellers for the show include Charles Stankye IV , a third generation performer joining his father and grandfather, Christopher Wentz, Alex Oppel, Jimmy Anderson, Al Palumbo, Barry Howard, Matthew Decho and Donald King. All are Troop 3 Eagle Scouts except for Oppel, who is currently a Life Scout. Stooges, performing run-on skits include Alex Neuendorf, Chris Townsend, Tyler Stankye, Adarsh Salian and Brian Mezzapelle.  The Stooges are under the direction of Rodman Kneen, Sr. who has participated in the show for a remarkable 74 years!

 

The scouts have been rehearsing since February for the May 8 & 9 shows. The theme is "Fabulous Fifties" featuring  many of the hit songs of the 1950s . Some of the highlight performances of the show include "If I don't have you",   by Chorus Director Ryan Downs, "Bye, Bye Love",  on Friday night to be performed by Cub Scouts Davidjon Kirpas and Naveen Madavala, and on Saturday by Boy Scouts Noah Cirisoli and Matt Moran,  "Be Bop a Lula"  by Cub Scout Ben Grasso and Life Scout Alex Oppel, who will play piano and sing for "Great Balls of Fire".

 

The show begins at 7:30PM with a 7:15PM pre show community sing. Tickets are $7, and can be purchased through any Pack 3, Troop 3 or Crew 33 scout, or by calling 203-733-5347 . A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.  Proceeds from the show benefit  the  scouts attending  Housatonic Council Cub Scout Day Camp, Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation summer camp and Troop 3's July trip to the Grand Canyon. 

 

Cub Scout Pack 3 Derby meets 7PM on Mondays at it's sponsoring organization, The Derby United Methodist Church. Venture Crew 33 is sponsored by the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club and Troop 3 Derby is sponsored by the Derby 2nd Congregational Church. Both the troop and crew meet on Wednesdays, 7PM at the Derby 2nd Congregational Church. All three scout groups are part of Housatonic Council BSA and welcome new members from throughout the Lower Naugatuck Valley.
